    My first attempt at bologna...

... is now in the smoker. Here they are waiting for the smoker to warm up: Here they are in the smoker: And here's the smoker bundled up and doing it's job: I'm planning on burning a pot or two of chips and then transferring them to the oven to finish them at a constant 200 degrees. I...

    Age that deer game

I've been collecting lower jaws since last year. My wife thinks I'm a freak. I thought it would be interesting to see what the knowledgeable folks here come up with for ages based on tooth photos. I'll post up some photos of a jaw. After there have been some "guesses", I'll post a pic of the...

The Whelen will have to wait until next year to get a chance

... the .270 stole the show this year. I headed out to a stand this afternoon that offers the potential for some longish shots. Despite not really intending to take a deer today, I took the .270 instead of the 35 Whelen since it lends itself a little better to the ranges expected at this stand...

    180 Partition, .300 Win Mag

I've already posted this info in the main reloading forum but here they are in the appropriate bullet test forum, as promised: .300 Win Mag 180 Partition ~3010 FPS The jacket and partitioned core of the bullet were recovered in the sixth jug. The bullet punctured the skin of the 7th jug and...

    225 Accubond, 35 Whelen

I've already posted this info in the main reloading forum but here they are in the appropriate bullet test forum, as promised: 35 Whelen 225 Accubond 2580 FPS The bullet went completely through six jugs, punctured the skin of the seventh and ended up on the ground. It retained 175.7 gr...

    Getting ready for Monday

I just finished loading some rounds for rifle season which opens Monday. 225 Accubonds for my Whelen and 180 Partions for my dad's .300 WM. Pretty strong whitetail medicine, but they should get the job done. The 35 is my #2 rifle this season. I'm going to try to get the job done with just...

    .30-06 Bullet Tests

Here's a video of some water jug hunting I did today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KYOzEHyZak&feature=autoplay&list=ULKTbGHYisC2I&playnext=1 I was a little misaligned for the first two and the bullets came out the rear corner of their respective last jugs. The 165 Accubond performed as...

.300 Win Mag vs. the jugs

Here's a video from today's experimentation. Hornady 180 Interlock SP at 3k. I'm going to load some up in my .30-06 to see what they do with a little less velocity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTbGHYisC2I&feature=youtube_gdata

    .280

Stumbled across this on a local forum: http://www.huntingpa.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2645184#Post2645184 I thought some of the .280 and Winnie aficionados here would enjoy seeing it. Pretty decent piece of wood and a fine chambering. I can remember this being for sale...

    .358" 250 Speer HotCor

250 Speer HC @ 2580 fps: 171.3 gr retained (68.5%), expanded to .599", recovered in 7th jug (and darned near made it into the 8th). I guess there's not too much to say about this one. It seems to transfer plenty of energy and penetrates very very well. There's not too much there not to like...

    .284 154 SST

This was a water jug test done at 25 yds with my .280 Rem. 154 SST @2950 fps: 92.9 gr retained (60.3%), expanded to .667", recovered in 4th jug. I've seen performance like this before with SSTs. They seem to separate but stay with each other, if that makes sense. The core was found with the...

    .277 130 Accubond

This was a water jug test done at 25 yds with my .270 Win. 130 NAB @3200 fps: 84.6 gr retained (65.1%), expanded to .654", recovered in 4th jug. I'm happy with this performance. Great expansion, good weight retention and decent penetration. It should deliver the goods on just about any shot...

    .277 130 Ballistic Tip

This was a water jug test done at 25 yds with my .270 Win. 130 NBT @ 3250 fps: 62.9 gr retained (48.4 %), expanded to .777", recovered in 3rd jug. It isn't quite the performance I want out of a bullet, although I'm sure it is more than capable of delivering some impressive kills. I thinks it...

    Tested some bullets today

Here is a video from today. I ran the 250 Speer HotCor (35 Whelen), 130 NBT (.270), 130 NAB (.270) and 154 SST (.280) into water jugs. All bullets were recovered. The Whelen definitely owned the show. There is no footage of the 154 SST on the video. The camera guy (that would be me) screwed up...

    Whelen Weigh-In

After I shot my No. 1A 35 Whelen with iron sights and found the recoil so tolerable, I decided to try to keep it as light as possible when scoped. My calculations showed it would weigh it around 7 lbs 12.5 oz. wearing a VX3. I actually weighed it today and it was pretty close. That includes a...

    Ruger No. 1 ring question

I'm going to exchange the high rings that came with my 1A and am unsure if I should go with the mediums or lows. I'm planning on a 32-36mm objective, so I'd like to hear what people are using on their rifles with similar scopes. Clearance for loading/unloading the rifle is also of concern. Has...

I joined two clubs today, those of the Whelen and the No. 1.

    Konus spotter

I've had my Konus 20-60x100 for coming up on a year now and have been nothing but impressed with it. It has allowed me to easily view my targets for the last ten months. I only have two hundred yard ranges at my disposal so I haven't been able to really put it to the test during my range...

    first SPS order

I placed my first order for Nosler 2nds tonight. The price of .22 cal 55 gr Ballistic Tips went up $5 a box at the local gun shop. That makes swallowing the shipping pretty darn easy. I got a couple of boxes of 130 gr NBTs as well. I guess I'll be hooked now and checking the inventory on a twice...

    54987 for the .270

The velocities I was getting scared me off of the 130 Ballistic Tips, so here is plan B: If these don't shoot for me, I'll try Partitions.
