270 Win E-tip and northern whitetail

Hi Gerry, The cartridge is a .270 Win (I grew up reading Jack O'Connor - was there any choice once someone made a left handed one?). I think I'm using Winchester brass, CCI 200 primers and IMR 4831 (I want to say 55.0 grains, but I'm not in my reloading room). Joel

270 Win E-tip and northern whitetail

Excellent performance once again from the 270 130 grain E-tip. The shot was at a large 10 point northern Minnesota whitetail in a hard quartering on position - almost head-on. The buck was about 70 yards away and screened by thin brush, but I could see a 6-8" window on his brisket. I was...

Meat friendly .270 Winchester "woods load"?

I've had good luck with the 130 E-tip over stiff load of IMR 4831. Meat destruction has not been excessive, expansion on the few bullets I've recovered has been excellent, and no concerns about errant lead fragments.

    Lead Free Bullets

I've been using lead free bullets on game now for 8 or 9 years, and have nothing but good things to say about them. I've mostly used the 130 grain Nosler E-tip in the .270, but have also used several of the 140 grain Hornady Mono-flex bullets in the .30/30. Both have done everything I've asked...

    Non-lead Bullets?

Hi Dan, I've shot a lot of game over the years with conventional cup and core bullets. In recent years, though, there's been more information on the secondary poisoning of eagles (we see a real spike in the number of sick eagles in the weeks following deer season - I work for MN DNR at a large...

Why I only hunt on my own posted property

These kind of events get a lot of press, and I don't excuse them. Fortunately they are less common than they used to be as awareness and hunter safety programs are implemented. Nonetheless, the most dangerous thing you do on a day of hunting is drive to your hunting location. I hunt public...

    .30-30 & .30-30 AI ?

Guy, I'll jump on the Leverevolution bandwagon. I used it in conjunction with Hornady's Monoflex bullet, and got good accuracy and killed the only buck I shot it at last year. The Monoflex in this instance is a gilding metal bullet - 140 grains spire point boat tail with a flexible tip. So...

    HORNADY GMX BULLETS

I had already started playing with Nosler E-tips, and liked them. Good accuracy and it killed both of the whitetail bucks that I shot with them (even recovered the bullets). Last year out of nostalgia, I decided to see how well the Hornady Monoflex bullet for the .30/30 worked. It was my...

    Sticker shock?

I suspect that there are others on this site that reload for shotgun as well as centerfire rifle. I mostly load 12 and 20 gauge, and have presses for both, but I also have an old family .410, and have a set of old Lee hand tools to load for it. Without the convenience of a press, I don't do a...

    30-30 Loads

After being impressed with 130 grain E-tips in my .270, I decided to try some Hornady 140 Monoflex bullets in my .30/30. After getting some of the bullets I decided to pair them with the new LVR powder. I had read somewhere (I think on the Marlin site) that a charge of 35.5 grains was the top...

    270 winchester & 130 etip

Hi JD338 and Dr. Mike, I don't have pictures of the bullet from the second buck - one of the petals broke off and it's not as classic. Here's the first one: This was my first venture into the realm of monolithic bullets, and I've got to say that though the sample size is small, I'm pleased by...

    270 winchester & 130 etip

I've had good luck with Nosler 130 grain E-tips so far, although the sample size is limited. My load is: WW brass CCI 200 primers 55.0 IMR 4831 This load groups in just under an inch in my rifle (Remington 700) with a fixed 4X scope at 100 yards. I've shot two adult whitetail bucks with the...
