As fall approaches the Hummingbirds who visits my feeders the male has become territorial and protects the feeder with a vengeance chasing others off.
He likes to perch on a Shepards hook that has a wind chime hanging on it about ten feet from the feeder in the mourning's while it is still cool and then moves to the shade of an oak tree nearby as it gets warmer.
When they were breeding, he would share the feeder with his mate and chick. The feeder is on my deck about ten feet from the sliding glass door making it easy for us to enjoy their antics. Being so close they are camera shy when I try to get a picture.

Can anyone say they have personally caught a hummingbird bare handed? I can and may parents and our horse trainer was sitting there when it happened. My mothers puts out feeders when we lived in Ruidoso, NM for race season. There was 1 near, but still far enough away from me as this crazy bird kept buzzing me. I told them "I'm going to catch it" , they said "no way". Well I did and let got after 10 seconds or less due to I didn't want to get punctured by that needle.

Yes, I can say this. Collecting my mail at the Custer postal station in Washington, I saw a hummingbird that had flown into the station. The poor little thing was exhausted from repeated futile attempts to fly through the window. I mean, he could see daylight, but something stood in his way. He had alit on the desk in the lobby. Walking over, I put my hand down near the little creature who immediately hopped onto my finger as though he understood that I meant him no harm. I walked to the door, stepped into the sunlight, and when I lifted my hand to the sky he flew away, pausing for a moment as if to say, "Thanks for the lift." A neat experience that has lingered in my memory for more than thirty-five years.

Great photos Alderman - it's been a bit of my summer-time passion as well.
