Favorite Powder for 160's in the 280 AI

I bet JD will be along to tell you R22 has made a lot of high marks for him.

In the past that has worked real well. I use 56.0 w/the 160 TSX @ 3.300" and always prints 1/2" groups. Which BTW when I was digging up this stuff I found the targets from Jarrett, and all three of the 175 NPT's were in the .60'-.69" range!

I think I'm being too tough on this gun and expecting better results!?!

Ha! You’re shooting Elk and deer. Don’t be too tough on it.

RL22 is my go to powder in the 280AI for 140-160 gr bullets.
With the 160 gr AB, 60.0 grs RL22 went .092" and 3000 fps.

Thanks JD,

I'd assume you're using a 26" barrel?

My rifle is based off a blue printed M700 action, Tubb recoil lug, Hart #5 24" fluted barrel and pillar bedded in a Remington LSS stock. Scope is a Leupold Mark 4. 4.5_14x40mm with M1 dials.
She is a tack driver with everything I put through her.

I'd say that is very close to my Jarrett Rifle then. I wasn't sure if the 2,950 mark w/a Woodleigh 160 gr. bullet was right at max for my gun with 60.5 grains of RL-22. That bullet is a Flat Base and at the seating depth I'm using sits right below the neck in the case, and why I had to use so much powder to achieve that velocity. I'm going to back it off by a grain though 'cause I don't like to run them that hard.

JD what twist are you using? And what is the proper twist for the 160 AB and LRAB?

I ran the 168 ABLR and 160 AB in my 7 WSM, 7 Rem and the old Mashburn using the 9.5 twist and they worked fine.

My twist is 1:9. The 168 gr ABLR went .056" with IMR7828SSC.
