Case Length 30-06

Sorry for the basic 101 ? about case length but that's what ya'll are here for. Ok for the 30-06 max case length is 2.494 using the Nosler Partition 165 gr. and pushing with some IMR 4350. I did a jam seat on my 06 and I came up with 3.359.5 and plan on dropping back .010 to put me at .349.5. So if caes max is at 2.494 and I had a a few around the 2.494 but had a lot at 2.492 so I trimmed to 2.490. So I think this is good but I see so many cases trimmed at different lengths and wounder if they have a rule of thumb like light bullet long case and heavy bullet short. And by the way I had about 100 of one shot federals and plan on using them for now but will upgrade later. Thanks for your time and input.

Max OAL (overall length) for the .30-06 is 3.340". That's a loaded round. Some rifles will let you load longer, of course, and some won't.

The case length for the empty brass is 2.494", trim-to length is 2.484". I haven't seen an issue with accuracy among cases of varying length, as long as none of them exceed 2.494". If you have brass of varying lengths I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're shoot 1k matches.

So you saying my best bet would be to stick with AOL @ 3.340" and trim cases to 2.484". That would put me around .019 off of landing. I know it's just a hunting load but I don't mind putting some extra time into the load. I know the smallest thing maters, it took me some time to get my 500 smith P/C out to 125 and moving out more farther.

SAMMI list the 06 with a max OAL of 3.340, yours may vary longer or shorter depending of the throat of your rifles barrel. Mag box length will also determine your OAL if you want a repeating rifle over a single shot.

When your brass stretches to 2.494 or there abouts trim to the min case length of 2.484.

The Overall Length (OAL) of the cartridge can vary based on your rifles throat length. 3.340 inches is the SAAMI spec, but you can vary it to tune seating depth to your hearts intent. For a Partition I usually start around 0.03 inches off the lands.

Length of the brass must not exceed 2.494 inches for safety reasons. 2.484 is fine. 2.490 is fine. 2.492 is fine. 2.496 needs trimmed. I trim to 2.484 so I don't have to trim every firing.
