I just picked up a Tikka t3 in 7-08. Never loaded for this cartridge before so any guidance towards pet loads would be great. I thinking 140 gr bullets. This rifle will be used for my wife's elk rifle once a year.

I have a T-3 in 7mm-08 also and killed a nice buck with mine last year. I loaded 120 BT's over Varget. I've never loaded it for elk, but I know it's an easy cartridge to load for otherwise. The Tikka's are good shooting rifles so that will help, too.

In the 308 based cartridges, Varget has been my go to powder. It doesn't always give the fastest velocity but I've always gotten excellent accuracy.

Ron

I got a Thompson Venture in 708 and it likes so many loads theyd be too numerous to mention. Varget on the light bullets and re17 on the heavier will be friendly. I also own 2 Tikka in other calibers.......you're gonna be real happy with your results!

Thanks. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. Rifle was used 1 hunting season with less than 1 box if ammo through it for sight it. 400 bucks. I figured can't go wrong

140 Partitions
start at 2.78" OAL
start with 44 grains IMR4350 (see if you can get that much in case, go from there)
Fed210 Primers

Shoot for speed at 2750 to a max of 2850. Chrony will be your friend here.

I would be looking at RL17 powder for highest velocity . I'd use a Partition bullet for elk , probably a 140 grain . in my opinion the 7mm-08 doesn't have enough powder capacity to handle heavy bullets well . I played with 168 grain bullets in mine for awhile and it just didn't impress me . I find these are easy to load for , I don't think you can put together a bad shooting load for the 7-08's . I have three 7mm-08's , each uses a different load . one is a Tikka 7mm-08 in the model 595 whitetail hunter , it's a good shooter .I think you'll like the tikka , the actions are the smoooooothest .

I've had 2 7-08s. One A Rem Mountain LS and the other a VL. I found the 7-08 a bit pickier to load for than the .308 but I got good accuracy using H-4350,H-414 and Rx19. In the 22" barrel mountain rifle I mostly loaded hunting ammo and got my best results with Hornady's 139gr Spire Point in front of 48grs. of H-414 For 2834 fps With 3 shot groups running around 1" and a bit under. 48grs of H-4350 gave 2756 fps with a bit better accuracy. The other rifle with a 26" heavy barrel Wasn't any more accurate with these loads but with Hornady's 162gr A-Max in front of 48grs of Rx-19 it would regularly put 5 shots into 1/2" or better. Another load that was super accurate was Hornady's 120gr V-max in front of 44.5grs of Rx-15 @ 3076fps. I'm showing a 5 shot group of .363". This load has no recoil, pleasant to shoot and doesn't disturb the rest much making it easy to shoot good groups.
I apologize posting about all these Hornady bullets on a Nosler's site.
Billy

Welcome aboard, Billy. Nothing wrong with posting about results here. Most of us have shot or do shoot Hornady bullets (and Berger, and Swift, and Remington, and Sierra, and... Well, you get the idea). I think most people posting here will recognize that we are blessed to live at a time when we have a plethora of good bullets from which to pick. Good first post with some fine insight. Thanks!

The 150 BT is a tough sucker. RL17 and a 150 BT would be a very good combo as well.

I used a 22" bbl for this .

Have 2 7-08 s in family and have found them very tolerant of numerous powders and bullet weights. Have had good results with Varget, H380 and H4350 with bullet weights from 120 to 162 grains. With a 24" barrel the little ole 7-08 doesn't give up much to the 270 Winchester using 10 grains less powder!

Here's all you need to know. The following bulls were killed with Tikka T3s in 7mm-08.

I'm not counting the deer and antelope.

The load:
Either 140 AccuBond or Partition, whichever shoots better
47.5 grains Big Game powder (max according to Nosler #7, work up slowly)
Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer
2.805" OAL

Partition 2870 fps
AccuBond 2850 fps

Thank me later.

I'm not counting the deer and antelope.

The load:
Either 140 AccuBond or Partition, whichever shoots better
47.5 grains Big Game powder (max according to Nosler #7, work up slowly)
Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer
2.805" OAL

Partition 2870 fps
AccuBond 2850 fps

Thank me later.

I am curious has anyone used the ballistic tip hunting bullets for elk? I shoot mainly AccuBond and some Partition but have never ventured into BTs for hunting
I think the BT is an outstanding bullet for deer. I've shot quite a few deer through the spine with 150 gr BT, totally destroying the bullet.
I would be concerned the BT would not hold up to an elks humerus. The AccuBond will in my limited experience.
