Season ended with a bang and some smoke

Took a medium sized (90lbs dressed) doe on Jan 23. 105 yard shot with the 62 rifle. She went about 75 yards and crashed. The ball went in mid-ribs and exited through (and breaking) the far leg. I didn't go out tonight, and tomorrow is the last day, with torrential rains forecast. Next...

A little something followed me home from deer camp

Went to deer camp in north central PA to hunt with the flintlock for a few days, and this 16ga Bucks County style fowler came home with me. Darndest thing I ever saw....I told the wife I made it sit and stay and then walked out of the cabin, but somehow it was in the truck when I got there...

    Beat the buzzer!

Yesterday (12/14/2019) was the closing day of our rifle season here in Pennsylvania. It's been a frustrating season. The deer have been moving fairly little, and I was constantly having "near misses" at opportunities. Archery season had been 10 weeks of that same frustration. I was, to be...

Rifle Loony-ism is grabbing hold of me again

A buddy of mine enjoys going to auctions as a hobby. He's gotten some stellar buys. He came across a transition period M70 rifle...standard rifle in 270 Win....in a stock he likes, but to a Model 70 person it's......well....it's not what most would want, put it that way. Anyway, bluing is in...

    PA Rifle Opener

Today was an historic day in Pennsylvania. Since the early 1960's, PA's rifle deer season opened on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Today it opened on obviously the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to much controversy among hunters. Opinions are very mixed. Be that as it may, we saw little deer...

    Sig got me...again

So a certain retired Marine convinced me of the merits of a Sig P365 back in Feb. Due to his bad influence...er...advice, I snagged a little 365 and immediately fell in love with the little bugger. It shoots really well for me, and carries just as well. So, even though I have two 10mm Glocks...

    Another M70 inbound

Hey fellas.....been a while since I was here. No excuses. Just sorta got out of the habit. I'll try to turn up more often, although maybe that's not a good thing, lol. So I have inbound a new-to-me M70. I know, odd for me, right? This one is a departure from my big game rifle norm, though...

Megan and the first day of rifle season

Today (11/26) was the opener in Pennsylvania for rifle season. We can take bucks or does in the area I hunt, and Megan and I set out as we have been every opening day since 2014 when she first accompanied me as a hunter in her own right. Forecast wasn't good.... some rain-free time this...

cheek pad and ammo carrier for a pre64?

My daughter has commandeered my pre64 Model 70 30-06. I mentioned it elsewhere about her being a lefty, now being a righty, and she shoots the 06 well. She's got a bit of a struggle with the stock drop and getting the scope aligned quickly, which I understand, since she's used to a good cheek...

    19, 26, 43...?

Long story short... I'm thinking of trading in my carry gun, an XDs 3.3" 9mm, toward a Glock. I've been shooting my G40MOS and I carry it when hunting/in the woods, and I have really grown fond of it. I thought about a 29 for carry, but I do think the 9mm is capable. I also like having at...

I'll take lucky when I'm not good...

Bow season started here in Pennsylvania on Sept 15. It's been a hot, rainy summer, and mosquitoes are potentially outnumbering humans by about 10,000:1 right now. My Thermacell has been essential gear. Thurs. Sept 20... I was late getting out of work, late getting to my hunting area, and was...

Had some fun with a trim little Swede

A rifle.... let's be clear. ;) So... been away from the forum for a while. No real reason...just life, busy, blah blah blah. My father has a Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 6.5x55. He has struggled to get it to shoot well. He taught me to handload, although he's never gone quite as deep...

I think the end has come

I've been out with the flintlock looking to fill a doe tag. I was out in falling snow and the bitter cold. I have my cold weather clothing fairly well sorted out at this point, that I'm actually not too cold when I'm out, even when it was in the single digits. (I know Cheyenne will giggle at me...

    Redoing my case prep process

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas, and that you have a joyful day with family/friends. My wife gave me Sinclair mandrel expander die bodies for Christmas, both the "up to 338" body and the 35-50 cal body (since I have a 35 Whelen). I'm looking to bounce some ideas off you fine folks...

    Daughter had a short season

Shooting time officially began at 6:35AM today on the 2017 Pennsylvania rifle deer season. At 6:40AM, this happened... One shot at 125 yards with her 7mmWSM and a 140PT and that buck hit the dirt. No deer I've ever shot has compared to how it felt to hear her rifle bark and watch that...

    Pennsylvania archery buck

Long story shorter, I shot a nice buck on my own land last night. The shot went a little awry, so after finding him alive but very sick and unable to get up, I backed out, waited about 3-4 hours, and came back to a very dead buck who was so stiff and cold he likely died just after I backed away...

    First elk hunt, Colorado 2017

I still haven't gotten an image hosting setup figured out since Photobucket went the way it went, so this'll unfortunately be without pics for now. I'll correct that in the future. I just got home this past Thurs. from my very first elk hunt, a 1st Rifle hunt for a cow in Colorado. This has...

    Elk tenderloin recipes?

What’s everyone’s favorite way to cook elk tenderloins? I may have recently come into a pair of fresh tenderloins. ;)

Strange data from Flat Spot load workup

I took my Whelen to the range today to run some charges for flatspot load development. It's not really what I thought I'd get, based on what I've seen folks post here, but I'm guessing there's a learning opportunity here, so I'll post the data for others who know more to check out and see if...

    Magnetospeed sporter vs V3?

I am trying to figure this out. Looks like the V3 will handle semiauto handguns, anything with a rail, and large muzzle diameters (mainly my muzzleloaders in my case). Pretty steep price difference between the two. Any input on reasons to get one over the other? Thanks!
