Anyone with 300 RUM experience, I'm experimenting with my new 300 RUM using 180 AB and various powders (RL-22, H1000, & Retumbo). Here is the thing, Nosler #5 states 87gn of RL-22 as max, but the Alliant web site states 90gn as max. Those of you with 300RUM experience, can I slowly/safely (.5gn increments) work up from 87gn to 90gn of RL-22? I'm on the central coast of CA, so sea level is about 100 feet. Let me know.

Yes you can. Every gun is an individual. Work up slowly.

My rum does 3165 with 200 gr AB and Retumbo---bY far the best powder for the rum by the way.

96 gr of rl 22 will get you 3500-3600 with 150 grain.
Ultimate antelope load...

unless I can get 3600 fps with a 140 AB out of my 7mm rum...if it does not sell that is.

Thanks Pop, I'll try a few more RL-22 loads. I already have some test Retumbo loads done, just no time to test during the week.

I have had good luck with my 300RUM using IMR7828, although only with 200 grain bullets(partitions, accubonds).
I get 3100fps with 87.0grains( 0.5 grain under Noslers listed MAX) and sub MOA accuracy from my M700LSS.
Just another powder you might try...

90.0 grn of RL-25 & 180gr A.B's are working great out of mine.
Viht N-165 works fairly well too.
I've tried the H-1000 with both 180 & 200 A.B.s but no luck with that one.

Books are pretty conservative in this caliber. Work up in 1g increments and you'll be fine. My favorite powder was H1000. I shot the 200g AB, 210g VLD, and 200-220g SMK's. I shot around 1200 rounds in the 2 years I owned my Rem 700 LSS. It was a very accurate rifle and shot many 3.5-4" groups at 800 yards with those bullets above and H1000. My velocity for the 200g's was 3200fps with 94g H-1000. I also used 89g H-1000 for the 220g SMK and 3000fps. I shot 180g btips with 97g H-1000 and got 3450fps. These loads were all safe in my rifle, but goes to show that the book is pretty conservative.

POP- Actually I think I was using Retumbo for the later part of my 210g VLD loads. I believe I was using 89-90g Retumbo which was good for 1/3 MOA and 3000fps. I only shot coyotes with the bullet but it did do a number on them. I believe I posted the pics on the forum. About pie plate size exits on all 3 of them. I did shoot a couple bucks this year with the 168g VLD out of the 7 RM and it did perform very nicely in my opinion. Both deer taken were complete passthroughs while the insides were completely mush like a bomb exploded inside there chest. The exits were 2" in diameter. WOulda made tracking real easy. I know you dont like target bullets for hunting, but the Bergers are gaining a good track record. I talked to one of them personally and they said they are designed for hunting as well as target shooting due to there unique design. The Wildcat RBBT ULD is also another bullet that is gaining popularity for target/hunting bullet. I'll be working up some 175's with RL-22 and H1000 here in a couple days.

That is true. I do not like Match type bullets but after a thorough search I did notice that Berger actually reccomends them for hunting. They even go as far as to expplain how their design works on game, on their website, as opposed to the MK's where they are not reccomended at all.
Additionally I have -up to the present- never heard of a Berger failing but I have seen and heard of myriad of failed MK's.

Their super high BC's also make them an attractive option.

I don't want to cause a big stink about this, but how can we call it a failure with a MK when they state they are not recommended for hunting?
